Grid cell based census results

In the Census database you can find the results of the 2011 Census for 11,339 municipalities, 412 rural- and urban districts, 16 federal states and Germany.

In addition, we offer datasets on buildings, dwellings, households, families and persons for the INSPIRE-compliant 1km and 100m grid. This is because many phenomena do not stop at administrative boundaries and many communities are so different in themselves that small-scale analyses are necessary. The grid data are available for all of Germany. They are documented in detail and are available for download as ZIP files.

For an introduction, we also recommend this article on the topic of small-scale segmentation, georeferencing and grid representation in the 2011 Census.

The data basis for Germany

For the first time since German reunification, a register-based census was used in 2011 to determine how many people live in Germany and what their housing and working conditions are like. In the Census database published by the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder, you can retrieve the results of the 2011 Census in a flexible and easy manner. Under www.zensus2011.de, you will also find detailed information on the legal basis and the methodology of the 2011 Census.

The upcoming census in 2022 will be the second register-based population census supplemented by a sample survey and combined with a census of buildings and housing. These results will also be published in this database. The statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder will keep you informed about the preparations and the current time schedule of the upcoming census at www.zensus2022.de.
